Harriers Foundation Description

The Prairie Inn Harriers Running Club was formed in 1978 and registered under the Societies Act in 1982. For over four decades, the Harriers have supported a number of educational, athletic and charitable programs starting with the Gunner Shaw Bursary in 1985. In 1986 the general membership of the club passed a motion to set up a Harriers Foundation to annually support community, athletic, youth and charitable initiatives in the Greater Victoria area. With the Gunner Shaw Bursary, John Thipthorpe Scholarship, Susan Reid Bursary, Arthur Taylor Award, Rosamund Dashwood Scholarship, Ken Smythe Bursary, Alex Marshall Scholarship and Sandy Auburn Scholarship all at their limit, four PIH events are designated annually to raise money to support further Harriers Foundation initiatives.

Foundation Board of Directors

The Harriers membership recommended that three club members be appointed to initiate new projects, administer the Harriers Foundation fund and produce a written report for each Annual General Meeting. Randy Jones, Susan Norrington and Bob Reid agreed to act as the initial Board of Directors for the Harriers Foundation with Bob Reid nominated as Chair and Treasurer.

Annual Fund Raising Events

It was recommended and agreed that the Harriers Gunner Shaw 10K Cross Country Classic on the last Saturday of November, the Harriers Thetis Lake 20K Relay on Remembrance Day, the Stewart Mountain 10 Miler in early December and the Harriers Memorial Run/Walk on New Year's Day would be the annual fund-raisers for the Foundation. Other events could contribute if the PIH Executive deemed necessary. Proceeds from the Harriers Pioneer 8K in January, the Harriers Elk/Beaver Ultras in May and the Harriers Boxing Day 10 Miler in December will go into the club general revenue account.

Vancouver Half Marathon and Chicago Marathon (2023) - $1,000
The Harriers supported two travel grants of $500 each for Joseph Camilleri to participate at the Vancouver Half Marathon on May 7, 2023 and at the Chicago Marathon on October 8, 2023. The Chicago Marathon is the Wanda VMM Age Group World Championships and Joseph has a very good chance of placing in the top three on the podium in the M70 age category. ASP
Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk (2023) - $570
On a calm, clear day, 38 club members donated $570 which was deposited into the Harriers Foundation account to assist with community projects and athlete support in the Greater Victoria area. DD
Alex Marshall Scholarship Automotive EV Servicing Scholarship (2022) - $15,000
A donation of $10,000 was presented to Camosun College and their administrators added another $5,000 to initiate a new a perpetual award generated from interest which will be made annually on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a Vancouver Island student in the Automotive Program specializing in Electronic Vehicle servicing. Selection of the recipient is made by the Camosun College Scholarship Committee. CSP
Canadian Cross Country Championships (2022) - $1,750
The Harriers supported PIH Youth Team members Charlie Mlotshwa, Tyler Browne and Ella Ballard with travel grants to participate as part of Team BC at the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Ottawa on November 26. ASP
Calgary Half Marathon (2022) - $500
The Harriers supported Joseph Camilleri with a travel grant to participate at the Calgary Half Marathon where he won his M70 age class by a staggering 30-minute margin of victory over Peter Carlton who finished 930th overall in 2:09:47. Joseph placed 153rd overall of 1,547 finishers in 1:39:41. ASP
Canadian Mountain Running Championships (2022) - $500
The Harriers supported Andrew Russell with a travel grant to Vernon to participate at the first ever Canadian Mountain Championships in Vernon leading to a world championship. Andrew placed third overall in the 11K National Championship event finishing in 44:12 while Harriers team mate, Lucy Smith, was the first master female in 55:57. There were 8 different races in Vernon with distances of 100K, 80K, 50K, 27K, 11K, 11K Nationals, Short Nationals, and Vertical Up attracting a total of 282 finishers. ASP
Edmonton Marathon (2022) - $500
The Harriers supported John Atkinson with a travel grant to participate in the Edmonton Marathon in hopes to qualify for the Boston Marathon on April 17 next year. ASP
Ukraine Medical Donations by Club Members (2022) - $1,000
Club members started a fund-raising program to gather medical equipment to be sent to Ukraine to help with their injuries resulting from the war with Russia. Several wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes as well as an abundance of bandages and braces were collected and sent free of charge thanks to long-time club member, Dick Palfrey, for arranging the complimentary shipping. Travel Grant, London Marathon (2022) - $500
The Harriers supported Joseph Camilleri with a travel grant to participate at the prestigious London Marathon where he did extremely well placing in the top three finishers in his age M70 category. The event was a world championship in all age divisions and athletes traveled from many other countries to compete at the London Marathon. ASP
Harriers Youth Team Support (2022) - $3,000
The Harriers continued to support their Youth Team of 65 school-aged runners, ages 12 to 19, coached by Bruce Deacon and Gary Barber. The club offered seed money to help the youth program and assist with travel to off-Island championship events, entry fees, BC Athletics membership dues, uniforms, accommodation and other needs to implement, assist and develop the Harriers youth program. Team BC Fees for Harriers Youth Team (2021) - $788
The Harriers supported three club members of the Youth Team by paying their travel and entry fees to BC Athletics so that Emma Vizina, Angelina Shandro and Ella Ballard could go as Team BC to the Canadian Cross Country Champions being held in Ottawa on November 27, 2021. ASP
Mountain Forest Road HAT Project (2021) - $5,140
A total of 44 Harriers donated $5,140 to the Habitat Acquisition Trust in their initiative to purchase 49 acres of private land and donate it to the Capital Regional District to establish a new Regional Park in Saanich. CSP
Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk (2021) - $578
Due to Covid-19, a virtual event was held this year with participants running or walking solo and mailing their donations to support the Harriers Foundation. A total of 20 club members participated. DD

Comrades 86K Ultramarathon in South Africa (2019) - $500
Travel assistance was provided to Catrin Jones for her to participate at the Comrades Ultramarathon in Durban, South Africa. ASP
World Cross Country Championships (2019) - $250
Travel assistance was provided to Bruce Deacon to spectate at the World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark in preparation for Victoria to host the Pan American Cross Country Championships at the Bear Mountain Resort in 2020. CSP
Team BC Fees (2019) - $735
The Harriers paid $735 to BC Athletics for 7 club members to participate as part of Team British Columbia at the Canadian Cross Country Championships held in Abbotsford in November. Harriers team members included Andrew Russell, Aaron Holmgren, Craig Odermatt, Jonah Brost, Jack Boden, Sarah Bryan and Delaney Chan. ASP
Oak Bay Track Resurfacing (2019) - $750
The Harriers donated $750 to Oak Bay Senior Secondary School to upgrade their track in preparation to host the 2020 Francophone Games in Victoria this summer. CSP
World 100K Road Running Championships (2018) - $500
Travel assistance was provided to Catrin Jones for her to participate as part of Team Canada at the World 100K Championships in Croatia. ASP
Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk (2018) - $1,010
More than 60 club members donated $ 1,010 which was deposited into the Harriers Foundation account to support community projects and athlete support in the Greater Victoria area. This year marks the second year of establishing the new Sandy Auburn Environmental Studies Scholarship at Camosun College. The goal of $10,000 was reached following the run. Long-term member and active volunteer, Sandy Auburn, passed away in September, 2016. DD

An award of $ 10,000 was donated to Camosun College to initiate a new perpetual award of $ 1,000 is made annually generated from interest on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a Vancouver Island student in the Environmental Studies program. A travel grant was awarded to 7 Harriers to participate in the 35th annual Lions Gate Gunner Shaw Memorial 10K Cross Country race at Jericho Beach in Vancouver. ASP
Canadian Cross Country Championships (2018) - $394
Team BC fees were paid for Natasha Wodak and Craig Odermatt to participate at the National Cross Country Championships in Kingston, Ontario. ASP
Gunner Shaw PIH/LGRR Inter-Club Challenge (2017) - $291
A travel grant was awarded to 9 Harriers to participate in the 34th annual Lions Gate Gunner Shaw Memorial 10K Cross Country race at Jericho Beach in Vancouver. ASP
Canadian Track and Field Championships (2017) - $1,000
Team BC fees, travel and assistance was provided to Natasha Wodak to participate in the 10,000 metre race at the National Track and Field Championships in Ottawa. ASP
Sports Hall of Fame Inductions (2017) - $550
Contributions were made to the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame and the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame for two tremendous master athletes, Maurice Tarrant (Greater Victoria) and Lucy Smith (Nova Scotia) to be inducted into their respective Sports Hall of Fame at the ceremonies which will be held in October and November. National and Provincial Track and Field Championships (2017) - $1,262
Team BC fees were paid and a travel grant was awarded for Natasha Wodak to compete in the Canadian T&F Championship 5,000 metre event in Ottawa, and the International Championship 5,000 metre event in Portland in June and July. She performed admirably in both races and was named to Team Canada to participate in the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in London, England from August 4 to August 13. ASP

The Harriers continued to support their Youth Team of 34 school-aged runners, ages 12 to 19, coached by Bruce Deacon. A travel grant of $500 was presented to Kris Swanson to participate as part of Team Canada at the World Mountain Running Championships in Sophia, Bulgaria on September 11, 2016. Kris was the top runner on the 4-person Canadian Team at the event. ASP

She performed admirably in all three races and was named to Team Canada to participate in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August in the 10,000 metre race. ASP
PIH Youth Team (2016) - $5,616
The Harriers continued to support their Youth Team coached by Bruce Deacon. The Team has about 25 members ranging from grade 8 to third-year university. This includes youth who are just starting to run to those who are competing at the national and international level. The club offered seed money to help the youth program and assist with travel to off-Island championship events, entry fees, uniforms, accommodation, transportation and other needs to implement, assist and develop the program. National Cross Country Championships (2015) - $973
Team BC fees and entry fees were paid for Natasha Wodak, Craig Odermatt, Colin Dignum, Tyler Dozzi and Jack Stanley to participate in the National Cross Country Championships in Kingston, ON, on November 28 as part of the provincial team. Natasha won the Senior Women's championship race and Craig won the Master Men's championship race. ASP

The Harriers held a Silent Auction and panel discussion at the Six Mile House to raise funds for the PIH Youth Team and assist with travel to off-Island championship events, entry fees, BC Athletics membership dues, uniforms, accommodation and other needs to allow young athletes to compete in provincial, national and international championship events. World Ultra Trail Running Championships and World 100K Championships (2015) - $750
A travel grant of $ 500 was presented to Jason Loutitt to compete as part of Team Canada at the World Ultra 86K Trail Running Championships in Annecy, France on May 30 and another grant of $ 250 was presented to Jason to participate at the World 100K Championships in Winschoten, Netherlands, on Sept. 12 and then he will run the Ultra Trail 100 Mile Championship in Mt. Fuji, Japan on Sept. 28. ASP
St. Patrick's Day Fundraiser (2015) - $1,200
The PIH Youth Team, parents and senior Harriers assisted Cathy Noel in staging the first annual St. Patrick's Day 5K at the Bear Mountain Westin Resort. Over 200 runners participated in the pouring rain while the Harriers provided volunteers for marshaling, finish line, aid station and race package pick-up. An honourarium of $ 1,200 was awarded the the Youth Team for upcoming travel to major off-Island events. ASP
Senior Track and Field Championships (2015) - $262
BC Team fees was paid for Geoff Martinson to run the 5,000 metre race at the National Senior T&F Championships in Edmonton, AB, on June 20 and 21. ASP
Youth Endurance Weekend Fundraiser (2015) - $1,542
On October 10 and 11, the Harriers Youth Team as well as many other young high performance endurance runners from the Pacific Northwest attended a seminar at the University of Victoria with guest speakers and a workout with Bruce Deacon and Cam Levins. Proceeds from the function will assist with travel for the Youth Team. ASP

A travel grant was awarded to Jason Loutitt to represent Team Canada at the World Ultra Skyrunning 70K Ultra Championships in June in Chamonix, France and a travel grant was awarded to Kris Swanson to represent Team Canada at the World Mountain Running Championships in August in Pesa, Italy. ASP
Harriers Hauler - Purchase of a Club Utility Trailer (2014) - $5,000
The Harriers purchased a 2010 Utility Trailer to transport club equipment to all Harriers-hosted events. The trailer will also be available for rent to the Goddess Run, Victoria Subaru Triathlon, Times Colonist 10K and GoodLife Fitness Victoria Marathon to deliver race equipment to larger races in Victoria. National Road Running and Cross Country Championships (2014) - $862
Team BC Fees were paid for Craig Odermatt to participate in the Canadian 10K Road Running Championships in Toronto and for Tina Connelly and Craig Odermatt to participate in the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver. ASP

The Harriers initiated a Youth Team of 24 school-aged runners, ages 12 to 18, coached by Bruce Deacon. The club offered seed money to start the youth program and assist with travel to off-Island championship events, entry fees, BC Athletics membership dues, uniforms, accommodation and other needs to implement, assist and develop the program. Provincial and National Cross Country Championships (2014) - $3,173
Ferry fares, entry fees and some hotel rooms were paid for 21 Harriers to participate at the BC Cross Country Championships in Abbottsford, for 23 Harriers to compete in the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver and for 12 Harriers to compete in the PIH/LGRR Interclub Challenge at the 31st annual Gunner Shaw Race at Jericho Park, Vancouver. Ironman Arizona, Canadian and World Mountain Running Championships and World Cross Country (2013) - $2,400
Travel assistance and entry fees/accommodation were granted to Julie van Veelen to participate at Ironman Arizona in Tempe, AZ, Kris Swanson to participate at the National Mountain Running Championships in Mount Sutton, Quebec and the World Mountain Running Championships in Krakaw, Poland and to Natasha Wodak to participate as part of Team Canada at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. More than 75 club members donated $ 1,005 which was deposited into the Harriers Foundation account to support community projects and athletes in the Greater Victoria area. This year's project marks the successful two-year completion of a new Ken Smythe Cross Country Bursary at the University of Victoria. DD
Provincial and National Cross Country Championships (2013) - $1,125
Team BC fees, ferry fares and race entry fees were paid for 12 Harriers to compete in the Provincial Cross Country Championships in Abbottsford and 10 Harriers to compete in the National Cross Country Championships in Vancouver. Natasha Wodak, Erin Burrett, Geoff Martinson, Kris Swanson and Craig Odermatt were named to Team BC for the Canadian Cross Country Championships at Jericho Park, Vancouver. ASP
Ken Smythe Memorial Cross Country Bursary (2013) - $16,010
An award of $ 1,000 generated from interest is made annually on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a Vancouver Island student in the Athletics program. Selection of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the University of Victoria, Faculty of Athletics. Based on the success of the New Year's Day Run/Walk and the proceeds from the Gunner Shaw race in November, the Harriers have donated $ 11,890 to UVic and this principle will generate $ 1,000 each year in interest to a Vancouver Island student in Athletics, specifically in the cross country program. Provincial 5K Road Race Championships and National 10K Road Race Championships (2013) - $1,600
Travel expenses and entry fees were paid for Gary Duncan, Ben Brezynski, Logan Roots, Ian Searle and Claire Morgan to participate in the BC 5K Road Race Championships in Vancouver and Team BC fees were paid for Kris Swanson, Craig Odermatt, Claire Morgan, Erin Burrett and Natasha Wodak to participate at the National 10K Road Race Championships in Toronto, Ontario. Lake Biwa Marathon and World 100K Championships (2012) - $1,000
Jason Loutitt was awarded a travel grant to compete as part of Team Canada at the World Ultramarathon 100K Championships in Seregno, Italy, on April 22 and Steve Osaduik was awarded a travel grant to compete at the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan on March 4 in an attempt to qualify for Team Canada at the Olympics in London this summer. Provincial and National Cross Country Championships (2012) - $3,108
Team BC fees, ferry fares and race entry fees were paid for 12 Harriers to compete in the Provincial Cross Country Championships in Abbottsford and 13 Harriers to compete in the National Cross Country Championships in Vancouver. Travel costs and entry fees were also paid for 20 Harriers to compete at the LGRR Gunner Shaw Memorial 10K Cross Country race at Jericho Beach, Vancouver. PIH won the Senior Men's Division, the Open Women's Division and the Master Men's Division for a clean sweep at the Inter-Club Challenge with Lions Gate Road Runners. ASP
National 10K Road Race Championship and National Cross Country Championship (2012) - $840
Team BC fees were paid for David Jackson to participate in the Canadian 10K Road Race Championship in Toronto and for Natasha Wodak, Kris Swanson, Juliette Christie and Norm Tinkham to participate in the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Vancouver. Natasha won a bronze medal in the Senior Women's race and Juliette took gold in the Master Women's race. ASP
Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk (2012) - $2,400
More than 90 club members donated $ 2,400 which was deposited into the Harriers Foundation account to support community projects and athletes in the Greater Victoria area. This year's project is the start of a new Ken Smythe Cross Country Bursary at the University of Victoria. Ken passed away suddenly on December 20, 2011 at the age of 78. Yuki Otsubo won the closest to his predicted time run and received a fruit and cheese platter. DD
National Road Running and Track and Field Championships (2011) - $1,090
A travel grant was awarded to Natasha Wodak to compete in the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Calgary and Team BC fees were paid for Harriers Dylan Wykes, Dylan Gant, Steve Osaduik, Natasha Wodak and Shauna Skinner to compete in the Timex Finale Canadian 10K Road Racing Championships in Toronto. World and Commonwealth Ultramarathon Championships (2011) - $500
Jason Loutitt was awarded a travel grant to compete as part of Team Canada at the World Ultramarathon 100K Championships in Winschoten, The Netherlands, on September 10 and at the Commonwealth Ultramarathon Championships in Wales on September 25. ASP
Canadian and World Mountain Running Championships (2011) - $3,750
Travel grants were awarded to Kris Swanson, Shane Ruljancich and Andrew Pape-Salmon to participate in the National Mountain Running Championships in Canmore, Alberta. Kris finished second overall, Shane was fifth and Andrew was tenth and top master. Sonja Yli-Kahila was third in her age class and twelfth female in the women's race. A club fund-raiser with members' donations and contributions from the Harriers Foundation and Vancouver Island Runners' Association enabled Shane, Kris and Sonja to represent Team Canada at the World Mountain Racing Championships in Tirana, Albania. The Canadian Men's Team finished 11th and the Canadian Women's Team finished 12th at this competitive international event. ASP

More than 70 club members braved the cold weather and donated $ 1,567 which was deposited into the Harriers Foundation account to support community projects and athletes in the Greater Victoria area. Provincial and National Cross Country Championships (2011) - $1,385
The Harriers entered 11 runners in the BC Cross Country Championships on October 29 in Aldergrove and Natasha Wodak, Lucy Smith, Sabrina Wilke and Erin Burrett of PIHRT won the team gold medal in the Senior Women's division. Lucy Smith, Juliette Christie, Natasha Fraser, Sean Chester and Mark Bomba went on to represent Team BC at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on November 26 in Vancouver along with 11 other Harriers. PIHRT took gold medals in the Senior Women's, Master Women's and Master Men's club teams divisions. Mark Bomba (M40), Nancy Baxendale (F45) and Cindy Rhodes (F50) finished first in their respective age categories. ASP
National Road Running and Cross Country Championships (2010) - $2,800
Team BC Fees were paid for PIHRT members Steve Osaduik, Dylan Gant, Richard Mosley, Kristina Rody and Natasha Wodak to compete in Toronto at the Canadian 10K Road Running Championships, fees for Steve Osaduik and Kristina Rody to compete in Montreal at the Canadian Half Marathon Championships, and fees for Lucy Smith, Natasha Wodak, Jessica Sedlock, Erin Burrett, Paddy McCluskey and Colin Dignum to compete in Guelph at the Canadian Cross Country Championships. Lake Biwa Marathon, Ottawa Marathon and World Mountain Running Championships (2010) - $1,500
Travel grants were awarded to Steve Osaduik to compete in the prestigious Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan and the Ottawa Marathon. A travel grant was awarded to Kris Swanson to participate in the World Mountain Running Championships in Kamnik, Slovenia, where he finished as the top Canadian team member. ASP
BC Cross Country Championships and PIH/LGRR Inter-Club Challenge (2010) - $1,400
Ferry fares and entry fees were paid for 22 Harriers to compete in the Provincial Cross Country Championships in Aldergrove where Steve Osaduik won the Senior Men's 10K, Paddy McCluskey won the Master Men's 8K and Lucy Smith and Natasha Wodak placed second and third behind Malindi Elmore in the Women's 6K. PIHRT won three team titles including Senior Men, Senior Women and Master Men. Ferry fares were paid for 16 Harriers to compete at the LGRR Gunner Shaw Memorial 10K Cross Country race at Jericho Beach, Vancouver. PIH won the Senior Men's Division, the Open Women's Division and the Master Men's Division for a clean sweep at the Inter-Club Challenge with Lions Gate Road Runners. ASP
Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk (2010) - $6,253
70 Harriers and friends showed up today at Beaver Lake to celebrate bringing in the New Year and donated $ 6,253.37 to the Harriers Foundation. Simply outstanding! Elaine Galbraith and Les MacNeill came away as the winners of the predict-your-own-time 10K run but the club came away as a big winner for the tremendous support of its membership. A HUGE thank you for your support to community, charity, educational, high performance and medical research initiatives. DD
Harrier Carrier - Purchase of a Club Van (2009) - $6,000
The Harriers purchased a 2001 Honda Odyssey to transport club teams to all up-Island and off-Island events. The van will also carry race equipment to Island Series races, Gutbusters and major events including the Times Colonist 10K and the Royal Victoria Marathon. ASP
National, International and World Championships (2009) - $1,780
Travel grants were presented to Meghan Huzzey to compete at America's Race Walk Cup in El Salvador, San Salvador, to Steve Osaduik to compete at the National Championship Ottawa Marathon and the Stanford Invitational Track Classic, 10,000 Metres in California, and to Jason Loutitt to compete in the World Mountain Racing Championships in Italy and the Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships in the United Kingdom. Team BC fees were paid for Scott Simpson to compete in the Canadian 5K Road Racing Championships in Toronto and for Natasha Wodak to compete at the National Track and Field Championships in the 5,000 Metre race in Toronto. The Harriers entered 32 runners in the BC Cross Country Championships on October 31 in Vancouver and won gold medals in the Senior Men's and Master Men's team divisions and silver medals in the Senior Women's and Master Women's team divisions. Lucy Smith, Juliette Christie, Steve Osaduik, Simon Whitfield, Richard Mosley, Jim Finlayson, Kyle Jones, Dylan Gant and Kris Swanson went on to represent Team BC at the Canadian Cross Country Championships on November 28 in Guelph and captured gold in the Senior Men's provincial team division and silver in the Senior Women's provincial team division. PIHRT took silver in the Senior Men's club teams placing second to Speed River. 24 Harriers traveled to the 26th annual Gunner Shaw Memorial XC race on December 5 at Jericho Park, Vancouver, to win the inter-club challenge with Lions Gate Road Runners. Dave Reed Memorial Donation to Heart and Stroke Foundation (2009) - $10,000
Dave Reed was a popular Harrier that passed away at the age of 54 after suffering a series of strokes. He provided much enthusiasm to the sport and to our club. The Harriers donated $ 10,000 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon in Dave's memory. The funds were raised from proceeds from the Gunner Shaw Cross Country Race, the Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run, the Prairie Inn Pioneer 8K and from generous contributions from individual club members. Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk (2009) - $1,820
Over 60 club members donated $ 1,820 which was deposited into the Harriers Foundation account to support a community project later in the year. Garfield Saunders and Hillerie Denning won the closest to their predicted time run and each received a fruit and cheese platter. DD
PF Chang's Arizona Rock 'n Roll Marathon (2009) - $1,000
Cheryl Murphy was awarded a travel grant to participate in the Rock 'n Roll Marathon in Phoenix, Arizona. Cheryl placed 8th in the women's field in 2:48:09, finishing her third marathon within the last eight months. Richard Mosley was awarded a travel grant to participate in two 10,000 metre invitational races in Stanford, CA and a 5,000 metre race in Eugene, OR, as well as doing a month of altitude training in Flagstaff, AZ. International Youth Challenge Racewalk (2008) - $420
A donation was made to pay for the facilities at the University of Victoria to support an International 10K Challenge between the top 12 junior racewalkers from Canada against the top 12 junior racewalkers from the United States. There are also Juvenile 5K, All-Comers 5K and 1.5K Coaches Challenge divisions. CSP
BC Cross Country Championships - Vancouver (2008) - $1,500
The foundation provided travel funds and entry fees for 23 club members and 2 managers to participate in the Provincial Cross Country Championships at Stanley Park, Vancouver, on October 25. The senior men's team of Steve Osaduik, Jon Brown, Jim Finlayson, Ryan Day, Todd Howard, Paddy McCluskey and Jason Terauchi-Loutitt captured the silver medal. The master women's team of Joan McGrath, Wendy Davies, Angela Plamondon, Cindy Rhodes and Nancy Baxendale also won the silver medal. The master men's team comprised of Herb Phillips, Norm Tinkham, Brian Connon, Walter Cantwell, Mike Lord, Hicham El amair, Garfield Saunders, Mike Moon and Gary Duncan won the gold medal. ASP
Adult-size Freedom Chair (2008) - $1,000
A "Freedom Push Chair" has been purchased and donated by Runners of Compassion and the Prairie Inn Harriers Foundation for use by Victoria-area runners and walkers. The Chair is manufactured by Baby Jogger Inc. and can be viewed at http://advancemobility.org/freedom.htm. Large children and small adults with mobility limitations can now enjoy excursions to the beach, at a park or on hiking trails with their families and friends. The chair is available for loan. Arrangements need to be made in advance to pick-up and return it. The chair can be folded and stowed in a regular vehicle and comes with a carrying case. There is no cost for use of the chair, but a donation to the Harriers Foundation is requested to cover storage, scheduling and future maintenance costs. In 2014 the Freedom Chair was given to the Victoria Red Cross Society for further management and distribution. CSP
Fukuoka Marathon (2008) - $1,000
Jon Brown and Dave Jackson were each provided with a travel grants to assist with their expenses to participate in the prestigious Fukuoka Marathon on December 7 representing Canada and the Prairie Inn Harriers. ASP
Gunner Shaw PIH/LGRR Inter-Club Challenge (2008) - $1,200
A Travel grant was awarded to 25 Harriers to participate in the 25th annual Lions Gate Gunner Shaw Memorial 10K Cross Country race at Jericho Beach in Vancouver. Harriers teams won the Open Women's and Master Men's Divisions to claim the inter-club championship trophy. Lions Gate Road Runners won the Open Men's Division. ASP
National Cross Country Championships - Guelph (2008) - $1,250
The Harriers Foundation paid the Team BC fees of $ 250 each for Steve Osaduik, Todd Howard, Richard Mosely, and Norm Tinkham so they could represent British Columbia and compete in the Canadian Cross Country Championships on November 29 in Guelph, Ontario. Team BC fees of $ 250 were paid for Eric Kiauka to participate in the 3,000 metre steeplechase at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa in May. ASP
Ottawa Marathon and UK Fell Race (2008) - $2,000
A $ 500 grant was given to Steve Osaduik to travel to Flagstaff, AZ, for altitude training to prepare for the Canadian Marathon Championships in Ottawa in May. This will be Steve's attempt to achieve a 2:12:30 qualifying time to make the Canadian Team for the Beijing Olympics in August. A $ 500 grant was given to Jason Terauchi-Loutitt to travel to Yorkshire Dales, England, in April to compete in the 24 Mile Long Distance World Championships Mountain Race. This fell race features extreme climbs over three mountain summits and has over 800 high performance runners from 30 countries competing. Jason is the only Canadian participating at this World Championship Mountain Race. A $ 500 grant was given to Sandi Heal and Dee Ogden to participate at the Ottawa Marathon and another $ 500 was given to Dave Jackson to do the Great North Half Marathon in England. ASP
Simon Whitfield - Questions and Answers for Charity (2008) - $750
In October, Simon Whitfield attended a Harriers Tuesday Night Workout at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre. Over 100 club members and families attended the run and enjoyed an entertaining presentation by Simon as he gave silver medals to all the children in attendance and answered questions on his training and his two Olympic medal-winning experiences. $ 750 was donated by PIH members which was presented to the Children's Hospital. Berlin and Ottawa Marathons (2007) - $1,500
Travel grants were presented to Jim Finlayson and Todd Howard to participate in the Real Berlin Marathon on September 30. Another grant was presented to Steve Osaduik to run the National Capital Marathon in May, 2008. Both Jim and Steve are trying for a personal best time and a sub-2:15, which is the IAAF qualifying standard for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Jon Brown will attempt to achieve his qualifying time at the Tokyo Marathon in February in 2008. Jon intends to run for Canada at Beijing, rather than for the United Kingdom. His marathon P.B. is 2:09:31 set at the London Marathon last year. ASP
Gail Timmer's Trust Fund (2007) - $250
A donation was made to CeeVacs to support Gail Timmer with her medical expenses. Gail suffered a rare and devastating streptococcal infection which led to toxic shock and kidney failure that cut off the circulation to her feet. She was forced to undergo the amputation of one leg from the mid-calf and also lost the toes from her other foot. Gail was very active in coaching field hockey, basketball and volleyball at St. Joseph's Catholic School in Chemainus. Her husband, Simon, is a tremendous master's runner. He set many Canadian age class records and established one world record in the Vancouver Island Series. CSP
National Cross Country Championships - Guelph (2007) - $2,000
The Harriers Foundation paid the Team BC fees of $ 250 each for Steve Osaduik, Todd Howard, Eric Kiauka, Morgan Titus, Jeff Phillips, Herb Phillips, Kirsty Smith and Wendy Davies so they could represent British Columbia and compete in the Canadian Cross Country Championships on December 1 in Guelph, Ontario. The senior men's team took first place of all the provinces and won gold medals in the regional championships. The senior women's team and the master's teams both placed second and won silver medals. Rosamund Dashwood Memorial Scholarship (2007) - $15,193
An award of $ 1,000 generated from interest is made annually on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a Vancouver Island first year student in the Fine Arts program. Selection of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the University of Victoria, Faculty of Fine Arts. Based on the success of the Rosamund Dashwood Run/Walk in April and the proceeds from the Gunner Shaw race in November, the Harriers have donated $ 10,000 to UVic and this principle will generate $ 1,000 each year in interest to a Vancouver Island student in Fine Arts. World Cross Country Championships - Japan (2006) - $7,500
Based on the success of the first IAAF fundraiser, the Harriers hosted a second group run at Thetis Lake Park to assist club member Steve Osaduik with his travel expenses to participate in the 46th annual IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. There were well over 100 participants at Thetis Lake representing 8 Greater Victoria running clubs and many running shoe stores. This was Steve's second Team Canada nomination. ASP
National Cross Country Championships - Vancouver (2006) - $6,000
Due to the recent success in Prairie Inn Harriers Racing Team hosting the BC Cross Country Championships at Lambrick Park, PIHRT was able to provide travel funds and entry fees for 40 club members and 3 managers to participate in the Canadian Cross Country Championships at Jericho Beach, Vancouver, on December 2. The senior men's team of Steve Osaduik, Simon Whitfield, Kyle Jones, Aaron Holmgren, Adam Campbell and Colin Jenkins captured the bronze medal. The senior women's team of Tina Connelly, Lucy Smith, Carolyn Murray, Cheryl Murphy and Natasha Filliol easily won the gold medal as did the master men's PIH 60+ team comprised of Herb Phillips, Maurice Tarrant, Brian Connon and Bill Hollingshead. The master men's 40+ team of Gary Duncan, Norm Tinkham, Dave Reed and Chris Kelsall took the silver and the master women's team would have been assured of a gold if one of the team mates hadn't taken sick the night before the race. Joan McGrath was the overall winner and Canadian Master's Champion for 2006 and Wendy Davies and Gwyn Woodson both had excellent races. ASP
Chicago Marathon (2006) - $1,500
Funds were raised and donated to assist Dave Jackson with his travel expenses to the participate in the Chicago Marathon. Recently being coached by Bruce Deacon, Dave has shown a steady inprovement this year in lowering his personal best half marathon times to 1:08 in finishing prominently in four half marathons in 2006. His personal marathon best of 2:24 was set in Sacremento last year and, with a good run in October, Dave hopes to dip below that magic 2:20 mark in Chicago. ASP
Berlin Marathon (2006) - $4,500
Based on the success of our first fundraiser in April for Steve Osaduik, the Harriers hosted a summer run/swim/BBQ at Ken Smythe's house on Glen Lake to assist club member Jim Finlayson with his travel expenses to participate in the Berlin Marathon. Jim will be attempting to lower is P.R. of 2:18 in an attempt to make the IAAF qualifying marathon standard of 2:15 in hopes to be considered for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Over 100 Harriers joined forces with Apex Runners to donate $ 4,500 to Jim for his ten day trip to Germany. ASP
National Cross Country Championships - Vancouver (2005) - $5,735
Funds were raised to support four Prairie Inn Harriers teams of 28 runners to the Canadian Cross Country Championships at Jerico Beach on December 3. The senior men's team of Steve Osaduik, Eric Kiauka, Jim Finlayson, Kyle Jones, Dave Milne, Bruce Deacon and Jonathan Withey captured the bronze medal. The senior women's team of Tina Connelly, Lucy Smith, Meghan Day, Cheryl Murphy, Nancy Baxendale and Nancy Tinari won the gold medal as did the master men's PIH team comprised of Steve Bachop, Todd Healy, Richard Lee, Gord Christie, Arturo Huerta and Herb Phillips. Bertrand Bozek won the Community Race with Sylvan Smyth placing third overall. ASP
Arthur Taylor Memorial Scholarship (2005) - $151,575
All the proceeds from the 2005 Gunner Shaw 10K Cross Country Classic were donated to the new Arthur Taylor Track and Field Scholarship Award at the University of Victoria. The award was initiated by the Victoria International Running Society, which donated $ 10,000, and will be administered by the UVic Athletics Department. The BC Government matched all donations and other parties contributed to the fund. Arthur passed away in July after a lengthy coaching service to Victoria Track and Field Club. He had an outstanding career as a master runner including a 2:27 marathon at the age of 50, a Canadian record that has stood for 24 years. The Harriers added another $ 3,000 to the scholarship from the Gunner Shaw 2005 race profit and have overseen the growth of donations since 2005. CSP
Asian Tsunami Aid (2005) - $2,270
$ 2,270.00 was donated to the relief effort in south Asia following the 2004 Boxing Day earthquake and tsunami. Funds were collected at the annual Harriers New Year's Day Memorial Run at Beaver Lake. CSP
Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay (2005) - $14,000
Captained by Debbie Scott and Sabina Reska, the Harriers raised $ 14,000 through pledges including a $ 9,000 prize money grant from Jim Finlayson and Wendy Montgomery. Jim and Wendy were the second Canadian Team in the "Run for Something Better" challenge as part of the Ottawa Marathon. During the relay, the Harriers team of 24 runners and volunteers, won the "Most Distance Covered" competition to collect the first place trophy. The event raised over $ 550,000 which will send 350 disabled children to the Society's specially-equipped Easter Seals camp at Shawnigan Lake free of charge for the summer. CSP
World Cross Country Championships - Belgium (2004) - $1,500
Based on the success of the first TLC Corridor Run, the Harriers hosted a second one six months later to assist club member Steve Osaduik with his travel expenses to participate in the 44th annual IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Brussels, Belgium. There were 86 participants in the corridor run representing 10 Greater Victoria running clubs. This was Steve's first Team Canada nomination and later in the year he won the Canadian Half Marathon Championships and will be travelling to New Delhi, India as well to participate in the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. World Mountain Racing Championships - Italy (2004) - $2,500
For the second consecutive year, the Harriers have four club members nominated to Team Canada to participate in the 20th annual World Mountain Racing Championships in Sauze d'Oulz, Italy. They include returnees Meghan Day and Syl Corbett and first-timers, Judith Leroy and Graham Cocksedge. As a fund-raiser, the Harriers coordinated a family hike, run and picnic at East Sooke Park with all donations going to the national team members travelling to Italy in September. ASP
Easter Seals 24 Hour Relay (2004) - $4,500
Captained by Debbie Scott and Sabina Reska, the Harriers raised $ 4,500 through pledges, a club dance and garage sale. During the relay, the Harriers team of 20 runners and volunteers, won the "Most Distance Covered" competition to collect the first place trophy. The event raised over $ 490,000 which will send 300 disabled children to the Society's specially-equipped Easter Seals camp at Shawnigan Lake free of charge for the summer. CSP
World Mountain Racing Championships - Alaska (2003) - $1,700
With the recent purchase of the new Thetis Lake to Mount Work Corridor, the Harriers initiated a mountain to mountain group run to raise funds for club members Meghan Day, Claire Townsend, Steve Bachop and Ian Hallam to travel to Girdwood Alaska, near Anchorage, to participate in the 19th annual World Mountain Racing Championships. For the four Harriers, it was their first ever nomination to a National Team. ASP
Thetis Lake - Mount Work Park Acquisition (2003) - $16,700
The Harriers partnered with The Land Conservancy to raise money through pledges from individual club members and coordinated an Activity Challenge for all sports. Through the Harriers, and their running associates in the Greater Victoria Area, the running community donated $ 67,700 to this $ 350,000 TLC land purchase initiative. On succeeding in reaching the August target date, 172 arces of private land was purchased and given to the Capital Regional District Parks Department to extend Thetis Lake Park north to Mount Work Park with a new connecting wilderness corridor. Les and Marcia Medical Assistance (2001) - $5,000
Les MacNeill and Marcia Stromsmoe were brutally attacked in Papau, New Guinea in December, 2000. Les suffered a fractured skull and very serious head injuries. He lost one eye and it was replaced with an artificial eye. As they had no medical or travel insurance, the Harriers started a Trust Fund to raise money to assist with their substantial medical costs. A cheque for $ 5,000 was presented on behalf of the club from PIH donations and Harriers events. ASP
Carol Bennett Memorial Drinking Fountain (2000) - $1,000
A contribution to the Carol Bennett Memorial Drinking Fountain at Oak Bay Track was made by the Harriers for use by all runners who train there regularly. The 2000 Harriers Gunner Shaw Cross Country race in November added further contributions from individuals to support this project initiated by Victoria Track Club. CSP
Rosamund Dashwood's Trip to England (1999) - $1,350
Rosamund Dashwood has been ill for some time, unable to run and not being too active. A friend has invited her for a visit to England that immediately improved her spirits. The club initiated a travel fund to assist Rosamund with meals, accommodation, clothing and spending money while she is away. ASP
John Thipthorpe Memorial Scholarship (1999) - $411
A contribution was made to the Thipthorpe Scholarship at the University of Victoria so that it could reach the ceiling of $ 10,000 once again. CSP
Glenn Jaques Memorial Walk Trophy (1998) - $400
To commemorate the contributions of Glenn Jaques, a non-competitive 10K Peoples Walk was added to the Harriers Elk/Beaver Ultras in May. A perpetual trophy was purchased in Glenn's name and is presented to the PIH Race Walker of the Year, for both male and female. CSP
Susan Reid Bone Marrow Transplant (1996) - $1,200
Susan Reid was presented with a donation to assist with travel and accommodation expenses during a three month bone marrow transplant operation at the Vancouver General Hospital in January, 1996. ASP
Susan Reid Memorial Bursary (1996) - $20,050
An initial award of $ 10,000 was presented to Heather Reid, then from the second $ 10,000 donation, a perpetual award of $ 1,000 generated from interest is made annually on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a Vancouver Island second year student in the Civil Engineering program. Selection of the recipient is made by the Camosun College Bursary Committee. CSP
Elk/Beaver Kilometre Markings (1995) - $500
The lake loop trails of Beaver/Elk Lakes were accurately measured by Laurie Upton and Bob Reid. The club purchased signs and posts which were installed every kilometre around the 10K circuit in a counter clockwise direction starting at Beaver Lake. CSP
Elk/Beaver Cross Country Course (1995) - $500
The club donated fill material and labour to develop an international standard grass cross country course on the meadows between Beaver and Elk Lakes. CSP
Harriers Memorial Bench (1994) - $1,000
A cedar bench was purchased and donated to the Capital Regional District Parks and was installed at Beaver Lake Park. A brass memorial plaque has the names inscribed of the following eleven Harriers: Bruce 'Gunner' Shaw, John Thipthorpe, Wendy Farrant, Brian Henderson, Stu Fall, Susan Reid, Glenn Jaques, David Kirk, John Harris, Josephine Hees and Dwayne Gough. Additional names will be added in subsequent years and all Harriers who have left us to soon will be recognized annually at the New Year's Day Memorial Run/Walk. CSP
Wheel Chair Wind Trainer (1993) - $900
A wind training machine was purchased and presented to a paraplegic athlete Lewis Orr so that he could train indoors for the Royal Victoria 8K and other races. ASP
Racing Wheel Chairs (1990) - $4,000
Two light weight racing wheel chairs were purchased and presented to disabled athletes Dwayne Gough and Bernice Wong so that they could compete in many local road races such as the Royal Victoria Marathon, the Harriers Pioneer 8K and the Times Colonist 10K. ASP
John Thipthorpe Memorial Scholarship (1988) - $24,626
An award of $ 1,000 generated from interest is made annually on the basis of financial need and academic performance to a third year undergraduate student in the program of Computer Science. Selection of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the University of Victoria, Department of Computer Science. CSP
